  • full-page newspaper layout on inauguration of President Barack Obama This was a big day in American history and I was glad to have an opportunity to do this page. The headline worked perfectly to sum up Obama and the situation of the country at the time.
  • Front page newspaper centerpiece profiling local Olympic gold medalist Hanah Teter This one is an oldie in my portfolio, going back to January of 2006 for the Olympic games. As we are generally pretty conservative on page 1 of the Rutland Herald (especially at the time this page was published) this page was a chance to make a big splash with a big event for the area, as Teter is from nearby Belmont, Vt. I chose to have Teter break out of the box of the package and into the flag of the paper and placed the headline on the blue background of the sky. Overall, a success.
  • Large front page graphic to mark start of baseball season This page was a lot of fun to build living in Red Sox country. We wanted to do a big splash on the front page of our Sunday paper for the start of baseball season and we kicked around some ideas in a meeting. Someone suggested using a Jason Veritek bobblehead doll on the front. I wanted something a little more inspired so I went over to the hobby shop and picked up this Jeter bobblehead for ten bucks. I yanked (ha ha) his head off, photographer Cassandra Hotaling got a nice shot, and this was it.
  • Informational graphic showing residences of city aldermen This was a large A1 graphic that illustrated where all of the city's aldermen live. The reason for this story was that there was controversy in Rutland Vermont over a proposal to go to ward-based voting. This was a nice way to use a graphic to show that most of the city Aldermen lived in a small area of the city. Also note that the graphic in the top left is my work, but the page was done by Times-Argus Editor Steve Pappas.
  • full-page newspaper layout on the naming of the new pope. This page marked Pope Benedict taking over after Pope John Paul II died in 2005.
  • full-page newspaper layout on cell-phone culture This graphic was used to demonstrate the level of student debt that students in Vermont have to take on. It called for a simple bar graph, but I jazzed it up with some stacks of books because the story rose to page 1.
  • full-page newspaper layout on the passing of the gay marriage bill in Vermont Gay marriage was passed in Vermont. This issue has great significance for the Rutland Herald, as editorial page editor David Moats won a Pulitzer Prize in 2001 for writing about the civil union debate.
  • full-page newspaper layout on the passing of the gay marriage bill in Vermont This is my page one of the Rutland Herald when Donald Fell was setnenced to death. This was big news in Vermont as it was the first death sentence in the state in 50 years.
